Why Hardware Development Takes Longer in the West Than in China

Why do U.S. hardware startups do so much of their development in China? "Moving atoms instead of bits around can be really hard," explained David Cranor when we spoke to us at the Solid conference earlier this year. While 3-D printing means physical models can be generated around the world in short order, actually getting things manufactured at quantity in 2015 requires access to materials and infrastructure.  That means being near factories and materials suppliers is important --  Low labor costs and lax environmental rules may draw business to China for low-cost, high-volume widget manufacturing, but for hardware developers, immediate access to parts and materials suppliers, and willingness to do business informally, are more important factors.
